ACS important

Dear Purple Eagle families,

It’s been wonderful seeing the excitement and energy our students are bringing to the start of this school year. With that being said, I’d like to take a moment to explain an important update regarding our grading system.

In line with our commitment to continuously enhance our educational practices, we are introducing a new grading system this year: a standards-based grading system using a scale of 1 to 3. This approach will help us better support your child's learning and growth.

What is Standards-Based Grading?

Standards-based grading focuses on assessing students' understanding and mastery of specific learning objectives or standards, rather than focusing on numerical averages in subject areas. This approach allows us to provide a clearer picture of each student’s progress in meeting the goals set for their grade level.

For more information on Standards Based Grading, please click here to watch Principal Conway's Google Meet presentation explaining this shift.

Understanding the 1-3 Scale

Our new grading scale is designed to give you a straightforward view of your child’s achievements and areas for growth.

Here is what each number represents:

1: Working Below Grade Level Expectations

The student demonstrates a limited understanding of the standard. They are in the early stages of learning and may require additional support to progress.

2: Progressing Toward Grade Level Expectations

The student shows a basic understanding of the standard but may need further practice and assistance. They are on the right track but have not yet fully mastered the concept.

3: Meeting Grade Level Expectations

The student demonstrates a thorough understanding and application of the standard. They can independently apply their knowledge and skills and show consistent performance.

Please note that teacher grade books will no longer be accessible to parents through PowerSchool as we shift to Standards-Based Grading. Teachers will collect multiple pieces of evidence to show growth and learning that may not be able to be captured in a traditional grade book. Click here to see an example of the report card .

Please feel free to contact teachers at any time to provide progress updates.

Moving to Trimester Reporting

In addition to adopting standards-based grading, we are transitioning from a quarterly to a trimester reporting system. This change allows for a more comprehensive assessment of student progress over an extended period. In addition to the trimester report, you will also receive a mid-trimester report for your child, providing valuable insights into their performance and growth.
