VETERANS HISTORY PROJECT
LEIGHTON "SLIM" JOHNSTON
As a reservist in the Air Force, Mr. Johnston did occassional work analyzing data, making predictions, creating maps and charts, and completing various other projects.
One of the things he did was to chart wind patterns around certain U.S. cities to predict where, if a nuclear bomb was dropped on the city, where the safest evacuation routes would be (to avoid fallout or other after-effects of the blast).
For another project, Mr. Johnston had to track the jet stream over the Atlantic Ocean and predict, based on how strong the wind was blowing, how much fuel a plane flying from Europe would need for it's trip.
