LEIGHTON "SLIM" JOHNSTON

ACTIVITY #1

The U.S.O. (United Service Organization) is a private (non-governmental) group made up of thousands of workers and volunteers. It's main goal is to show service men and women how much they're apprectiated by their fellow Americans back home. To do this, the U.S.O. sends CARE gift packages to the troops, helps keep them connected to their families back home, offers counseling, provides help with housing and other services, and (probably what they're most well known for) host entertainment shows for the troops to keep their spirits up. (To find out more, click here to visit their home page.)

Imagine yourself as the producer/director of a U.S.O. show sent to entertain American troops in the South Pacific, where Mr. Johnston was stationed. Write a song, a poem, or a short skit/play that shows how much you appreciate the soldiers' efforts to protect you and your country during World War II.
