Recommendation from the School Physician
When should my child stay home?
Students should stay home when they have the following signs
and symptoms:
Fever of 100°F(37.8° C) or greater
Cough
Runny Nose
Sore Throat – (strep throat – must be on antibiotics
for 48 hours before returning to school)
Vomiting - can return to school after no vomiting for 24 hours
Diarrhea – can return after diarrhea free for 24 hours
If symptoms persist or get worse, such as breathing difficulties,
severe vomiting or diarrhea and/or fever consistently above 100°F
for more than 48 hours, you should seek further medical attention.
When should my child return to school?
It is recommended that students stay home until at least
48 hours after they are free of fever [100°F (37.8°
C) or greater] or signs of a fever, without the use of
fever reducing medications such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen.
If cough has been present, it must be diminished before child
may return.
What can we do to reduce the chances of spreading or “catching”
Influenza and/or other illnesses?
•Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after
coughing or sneezing
•Use alcohol based hand sanitizers to clean hands if soap
and water are not available
•Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing
or sneezing and throw the tissue in the trash after use (if no
tissue is available, cough or sneeze into your arm or sleeve—not
your hand)
